This week I looked at a few classmates journals and spoke to Ms. McInnes about what I had missed. From this I gathered the following information.
Research Evaluation Key Points:
1. of research processes used e.g. books, internet, interviews, EBSCO host, news, magazines and experts.
2. of your chosen capabilities.
3. aspects of outcomes and relevance to you and others.
In thursday's lesson, I added to my journal and started on my outcome.
Week 10:
In Monday's lesson, I dedicated more time to my journal and talked to Ms. McIness about my research project. At the present time, I was failing which is why I was determined to turn it around and get a better grade so I could pass the Research Project 2011. I was also hoping to do my discussion today, so I could get it out the way as I would be absent from Wednesday to Friday due to a P.E excursion. I managed to secure a time for my discussion with Ms. Mcinnes Monday after lunch. I found the discussion helpful and relieved when it was over. I felt like a weight had been lifted because now I had a better direction of what to do. I am going to try and get an interview with my coach or a trainer because we agreed it would be the best possible thing to do for my project. I spoke to Ms. McInnes about maybe going to a sports clinic and getting as much information as I can, whether I interview someone or even just collect pamphlets to help me with my research. We also talked about capabilities and what my my direction was with my project and how I came up with the idea for my topic. From Wednesday - Friday, I was absent due to a P.E excursion.
Week 9:
This week, I was told about the Discussion. Because of absences, I miss the informatoin that had been given to the rest of the class. Ms. McIness talked to me about it and gave me a few sheets which are designed to help with the discussion. I missed the only appointed times left for the discussion because of a continuous illness but I hope I can maybe get in for a discussion, so I can help increase my grade and at least get marks for that part of the research project. I will talk to Ms. McIness about maybe trying to have my discussion and I can only hope I am able to get an appointment time. In thursdays lesson, I worked on my journal some more, producing more questions to ask my interview-ee and I thought about who would be the best person to interview. Right now I am leaning on a member of the P.E staff who has had football experience because they will be the best for knowledge and experience and it may be easier to get an appointed time for an interview. I need to do the interview really soon, this is another reason why I think a teacher is the best option at the moment.
Week 8:
Because I was absent last week, Ms. Mcinnes gave me my blue folder which the rest of the class had been given. The folder contained an assessment sheet and Ms. McIness had highlighted the marks on the rubric sheet. Because of Mr. Cook being a TRT, it may be difficult for me to acquire an interview with him. I can opt for something else though, like interviewing a permanent P.E teacher or even trying to get an interview with my football coach or someone that works at the football club. I think it would be a great idea to interview someone who has had experience playing football because that's what the project is about and it will be easier to narrow things down, although a P.E teacher with no football experience will still be good, because they would have plenty of knowledge about injuries and the best ways to prevent them.
Week 7:
For the duration of this week, I was absent due to an illness which continued throughout the weekend. I wasn't able to continue with my research because I was not able to access internet from home.
Week 6:
I started to to think of the questions I am going to ask the person I interview. I may be interviewing a specialist or a teacher who has had experience playing football in the past. Because of a few incidents, I'm not going to be interviewing a crows player but I am hoping to interview Mr. Cook, who is a relief teacher at my school and also played for the crows in the AFL several years ago. I also happen to know that he has sustained injuries during his playing career, which will be a great asset to my project.
Questions:
- Have you ever had an injury?
- How did you get this injury?
- What did you to to treat this injury?
- How long was the recovery period?
- Have you ever had more than one injury?
- Did your coach ever talk about preventing injuries?
- What training methods did you use to minimize injuries?
- Were they affective?
- Did having an injury change your mind about playing football?
Week 5:
In the first few lessons of this week, I started The Five Why's. The are Five why questions about the topic which are then answered. In thursday's lesson I started to brainstorm questions for my survey and started to think about how I wanted to do my survey.
The Five Why's
Why is prevention of injuries such a big topic to cover?
It is such a large topic to cover because many people are involved in sport. Injuries are a big factor on many people's playing career so alot of people consider what it would be like to have an injury and how it would affect their playing career.
Why do people consider what it's like to have an injury?
Many people play competitive sports such as football, which can be an important thing in some people's life. Injuries can affect whether a person can ever play football again, which is why some people may seek information on how to prevent injuries.
Why do people seek information on how to prevent injuries?
Certain people may seek information, bececause they may have suffered an injury and need to seek advice on how to treat their injury or prevent future injuries. The person seeking the information may not have had an injury before, but still seeks the information to avoid being injured, because they may play some sort of sport. They may also just want this knowledge for future references.
Why do they just want this knowledge for future references?
They may want knowledge of how to prevent injuries because they worry about being injured in activities or sports.
Why do people worry about being injured in Football?
People may worry about being injuried because it could lead to future issues or it could be the reason they have to stop playing competitive sports. Week 4:
Due to unavoidable absences for the majority of this week, I devoted some of my spare time to catching up in several areas that are currently missing.
For the first time, I attempted to use the EBSCO host to help further my research and understanding of the topic I have chosen.
Week 3:
In the first lesson of the week, we watched a video about Research Project. I found it very informative and instructive. It told me exactly what I can do and helped me to understand the Research Project better. Due to unavoidable circumstances, I was unable to attend the rest of the lesson, so I continued to reseaarch stuff for my project in the Senior Learning Area. In tuesdays lesson, the class had time to update our journals, because of Fridays missed lesson. I was introduced to an evaluation method called CRAP (Currency, Reliability, Authority and Purpose). I also wrote up my Research Proposal in this lesson. Also, in Tuesday's double lesson, the class was introduced to the 5 W's. These are Who, What, When, Why and hoW. In Friday's lesson, Ms. McIness showed me an example of a student who had done a Research Project on Injuries in netball. I found this very informative, as it gave me numerous idea's of ways I could write my essay and present my information and what I could include into my project.
Proposal:
The topic I have chosen to research is Minimizing Injuries in Football. This is a great topic for me as I am just starting to play football and interested how players prevent injuries. In this topic I will cover prevention of injuries, warm ups that can help, recovery time, players that have had injuries and what they did to recover. I will also attempt to talk to a crow’s player for tips and information on what the players do to prevent injuries and how they train. I will make up a list of questions I can ask.
I have been collecting my information from several sources so far. I have been using the internet, at home and school, I’ve been visiting the school library and borrowed a few books with a vast amount of information, which will be very useful for my research.
I plan on speaking to a football player who plays AFL for the Adelaide Crows. This player is Brad Symes and he's had experience with injuries and how to treat them and the process of recovery and the best way to prevent injuries. This will be very good because it gives me the opportunity to collect information from a primary source, someone who is a professional. This will be great, because it provides greater opportunity to expand on my research project and add more information than I would have gathered without talking to someone professional who really knows what they’re talking about
I will be more than likely talking to a Crows player at a friend’s house, because their cousin plays for the Adelaide Crows and said they could help out and said up an interview which will be excellent.
I believe I will find out lots of important information for my research project, like how to prevent injuries and the best way to treat them. I will also find out how long it takes to recover from an injury.
Week 2:
In Monday's lesson, I decided to talk to Ms. McInnes about the topic I chose for my research because I was a little hazy about the amount of information that could be collected. After discussing what I could do, we came up with the idea of researching 'minimizing injuries in sport'. I thought this was great as there is a lot of information on prevention on injuries and what you can do to prepare yourself in the case that it happens. I used wonder wheel search again and narrowed my search down to 'minimizing injuries in football'. I have been thinking about what I could do for this, as well as my presentation and essay. I was thinking, perhaps I could come up with some questions that I could ask a football player in the AFL, who has had an incident with an injury, that affected his football career. A fellow classmate said they could give me the opporunity to talk to a football player, as they have a cousin who plays for the Adelaide Crows. On Friday we had an induction day at Uni SA, so this meant we missed out on that lesson.
Week 1:
In the first lesson, we were introduced to the class and the sort of stuff and requirements that have to be met in this course. We were then shown a few examples of work, completed by students doing the course the previous year. Ms. McInnes then explained to us that we have to choose a topic to research and write an essay the topic of choice chosen for research. The class wasn't sure if we were allowed to work in groups or not, so i started brainstorming ideas for my topic.Over the next few days, I considered doing sexual health, but after a some more thought I decided to do injuries in sport. This was decided after we were told that we were not allowed to work in groups by the Research Project coordinator. In the next lesson, the class started using wonderwheel. This is a more effective way or researching a topic because it breaks down all the different sectors of a topic and it becomes easier to access and find a specific part of the topic that you want to research. In thursdays lesson, the class went to the library. Ms. McInnes had set out books on all of the tables and we were able to look through them to find information or ideas that might be helpful for our research. We rotated tables after a certain amount of time, so each student had the opportunity to view all the different books. I find some of the possible topics amusing and even informing but I was already set on my topic for Research Project as it interests me a great deal. Unfortunately, I found not a great amount of useful information, but I will look through other sources in the library. Fridays lesson was the first time the class had the chance to write our journals, so the class spent majority of the lesson catching up.
